a great choice Late pruning to limit frost damage

In Burgundy, spring frosts regularly affect the vineyards. In 2021, the region was one of the worst affected. In the Côtes de Beaune and Nuits, most plots lost 50% of their buds due to frost.

Franck Roumier and his father Laurent have started late pruning.

Two methods are being tested this season:

  • late pruning in two stages, in mid-January and during March
  • late pruning in mid-March

The aim of late pruning, particularly on an early-ripening grape variety such as Chardonnay, is to delay bud burst to avoid frost damage.

Late pruning in two stages saves Burgundy winegrowers time. It allows them to clear the vines of non-productive wood for the 2022 vintage.
In mid-January, this wood is pruned and pulled.

In March, all that's left to do is prune the cane and the spurs.

Franck and Laurent Roumier carry out the late pruning on a few ares in a single operation.

"This is the first year we've carried out late pruning in March. We're looking for the most effective way to prevent frost and the one that's best suited to the estate's logistical constraints.
